Es war der langerwartete erste Auftritt der US-Auswahl beim diesjährigen Albert Schweitzer Turnier. Die legte sogleich einen perfekten Start hin: August Mahoney erzielte den ersten Dreier der Partie, Bryce Wills, Marcus Littles und Issa Muhammed legten noch je zwei Punkte drauf, 9:0. Point Guard Lucas Bourhis markierte die ersten Punkte für Frankreich. Aber auch dann kamen die Franzosen erstmal nicht so richtig in die Partie, beim 16:6 nahm Coach Frédéric Crapez seine erste Auszeit. Danach war sein Team fokussierter und konnte etwas verkürzen, aber die USA blieben vorne.

Ein anderes Bild im zweiten Viertel: Frankreich spielte jetzt wie ein Topteam, Timothé Crusol, Benjamin-David N’Gondo-Bayela und Quentin Klingelschmitt sorgten für einen 9:0 Lauf für die Jungs in blau (22:28). Bryce Wills schnappte sich einen wichtigen Offensivrebound und scorte mit Foul, nach dem Bonusfreiwurf stand es 36:40. Auch Jordan Wright traf noch einmal von der Linie, bevor es in die Pause ging (37:40).

Zu Beginn der zweiten Hälfte netzte Andre Jackson für drei ein, Issa Muhammed legte nach und brachte die USA mit einem Punkt in Front. Die Führung wechselte jetzt einige Male, bis Frankreich sich einen kleinen Vorsprung erspielen konnte (54:59). Mahoney traf erneut von draußen für die USA, 57:59.

Obwohl das Spiel eng und durchaus umkämpft war, wollten beide Teams nicht darauf verzichten dem Publikum einige Highlights zu bieten. So sahen die Zuschauer in der gut gefüllten Waldsporthalle in Viernheim eine Vielzahl von Dunks und Blocks. Bryce Wills traf zweimal von der Freiwurflinie zum 70:71, danach drehten Mathis Dossou Yovo und Calvon Hippolyte das Spiel mit einfachen Fastbreakpunkten zugunsten der Franzosen (70:75). In den letzten Minuten wirkten die Teams etwas müde, Fehler und vergebene Würfe häuften sich. Frankreich gelang es, die Führung über die Zeit zu retten und gewann verdient mit 73:79.

The long expected first game of the United States team at this year’s Albert Schweitzer Tournament: Perfect start for the US team, August Mahoney made the first three pointer in the game, Wills, Littles and Muhammed added two points each, 9:0. Point guard Lucas Bourhis scored the first points for France. Still, the French were not really in the game, with 16:6 on the scoreboard, coach Frédéric Crapez called his first time-out. After that his team was more focused: France started a little run, scored some points, but the US-team was still ahead (22:19).

Things changed in the second quarter: France now played like a top-team. Timothé Crusol, Benjamin-David N’Gondo-Bayela and Quentin Klingelschmitt worked for a 9:0-boost for the boys dressed in blue (22:28). Bryce Wills grabbed an important offensive rebound and scored with foul – 36:40. Another free throw made by Jordan Wright marked the halftime result (37:40).

Andre Jackson netted in for three, 40:41. Issa Muhammed scored and brought the US up by 1, but France scored for three. Now the lead changes several times, until the French could gain a five-point advantage (54:59). Mahoney scored another three pointer, 57:59.

Although the game was close, both teams wanted to show their most spectacular moves to the audience. So, the spectators could enjoy lots of dunks and blocked shots in the last stretch.  Bryce Wills made two free throws (70:71), then Mathis Dossou Yovo and Calvon Hippolyte scored easy fast-break points for France (70:75). In the last minutes, the teams looked a little tired, with failure and missed shots on both sides. France could save its lead and won the game well-deserved 73:79.
