Das zweijährige Warten der Fans von Weltklasse-Nachwuchsbasketball hat am 04. April 2026 ein Ende. Dann nämlich beginnt das 31. Albert Schweitzer Turnier (AST) für männliche U18-Nationalmannschaften in Mannheim und Viernheim (bis 11. April 2026). 2024 hatte das AST nach sechsjähriger Pause (drei Mal verschoben wegen der Corona-Pandemie) zum 30. Mal stattgefunden. Australien gewann und ist somit Titelverteidiger beim Turnier im kommenden Jahr. Erstmals findet im Rahmen des AST auch ein Turnier für U18-Mädchen statt (Infos siehe unten, Spielplan-und Ticketinfos folgen zeitnah).
Das Teilnehmerfeld der U18-Jungen steht bereits fest. Und man kann mit Fug und Recht den Begriff „bunt“ verwenden um es zu beschreiben. Vier Kontinente sind beim AST 2026 vertreten, darunter mit Bahrain auch ein Team, das erstmals in der dann 68-jährigen Geschichte des Turnieres teilnimmt. Die deutsche U18 wird alles daran setzen, den beiden Titelgewinnen aus den Jahren 2016 und 2018 einen weiteren folgen zu lassen.
„Die Vorfreude auf das AST 2026 ist riesengroß und die Vorbereitungen laufen auf Hochtouren. Wir werden unseren Gästen aus aller Welt wieder ein tolles Event mit hochklassigem Basketball und mit ganz viel drumherum anbieten. Das AST ist nach wie vor sehr beliebt und wir mussten wieder einigen interessierten Nationen absagen. Großartig finde ich, dass wir durch die verstärkte Unterstützung und das große Engagement unserer Partner im kommenden Jahr auch ein U18-Turnier für Mädchen mit in das AST integrieren konnten. Das macht es für die tausenden Basketballfans in Deutschland sicher noch interessanter, rund um Ostern 2026 nach Mannheim und Viernheim zu kommen“, so Stefan Raid, DBB-Vizepräsident für Jugend und Schule.

The two-year wait for fans of world-class junior basketball will come to an end on April 4, 2026. That’s when the 31st Albert Schweitzer Tournament (AST) for U18 men’s national teams will begin in Mannheim and Viernheim (until April 11, 2026). In 2024, the AST took place for the 30th time after a six-year hiatus (postponed three times due to the coronavirus pandemic). Australia won and is therefore the defending champion at next year’s tournament. For the first time, a tournament for U18 girls will also be held as part of the AST (see below for details).
The field of participants for the U18 boys has already been determined. And it is fair to use the term “colorful” to describe it. Four continents are represented at the AST 2026, including Bahrain, a team that is participating for the first time in the tournament’s 68-year history. The German U18 team will do everything in its power to add another title to the two it won in 2016 and 2018.
„The anticipation for the AST 2026 is huge and preparations are in full swing. We will once again offer our guests from all over the world a great event with top-class basketball and lots of other activities. The AST is still very popular and we had to turn down several interested nations again. I think it’s great that, thanks to the increased support and tremendous commitment of our partners, we have also been able to integrate a U18 tournament for girls into the AST next year. This will certainly make it even more interesting for the thousands of basketball fans in Germany to come to Mannheim and Viernheim around Easter 2026,“ said Stefan Raid, DBB Vice President for Youth and Schools.
