28th Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Mannheim and Viernheim

Since 1958, the Albert Schweitzer Tournament (AST) for Youth National Teams is played in Mannheim (since 2012 in Viernheim, too). Many great Basketball talents met and meet at the AST. Players that later became superstars like „Magic“Johnson, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan or Dirk Nowitzki – just to name a few– collected their first international experiences at here, while later putting their name down in NBA history.

When the 28th Albert Schweitzer Tournament for Under 18 teams kicks off on Easter Saturday March 26th, 2016 there is no doubt one can talk about a ‘Mini World Championship’. Participants from five continents are taking part this time.

The number of participants has been reduced from 16 to twelve. “We want the AST to be even closer, the games to be even tighter and even more thrilling. The audience in Mannheim and Viernheim deserves this and I hope that they will honor this change”, said Uwe Albersmeyer, Youth Secretary of the German Basketball Federation. The staff of the German Basketball Federation is working with full speed and cannot wait until the tournament starts.

The USA represent North America, Argentina is participating from South America, Egypt is the African representative, China and Japan are participating from Asia and Australia will represent Oceania after being absent once last time. Together with Germany (Foto above left Isaiah Hartenstein, right Nelson Weidemann), the reigning champion Italy, France, Greece, Serbia and Turkey most of Europe’s top teams will be present as well.

“The City of Mannheim is very proud to be the host of this great tournament again which brings the most talented Basketball players of the world together. Fostering talent is one of the main goals of the City of Mannheim. That is why we support this youth tournament in such a special way”, underlines Sports Major Lothar Quast.

ASTSzene2014-500The competition system will be changed compared to the previous years. Two groups of each six teams will be formed, every team plays every team. After that, the two first teams of each group are directly qualified for the semi-final. There is one off day (Tuesday, March 29th, 2016) as usual which teams, referees and officials traditionally use to make tours in the area. On that day, the City of Mannheim also hosts their official reception.

“All Basketball fans in South Hesse and the Metropolregion are served a Basketball goody – also thanks to the support of the State Hesse. The games of the young teams are always thrilling. Citizens of the region which are new to Basketball and may want to test it can check the games out with the new ‘last game ticket’. The last game of the day can be watched for only 5 / 10 Euro – that is a great deal! Part of the AST is also a clinic of sport teachers – there is a lot going on around the tournament”, says the major of the City of Viernheim Matthias Baaß.

This year’s list of participants features seven nations that were able to win the AST at least once in history: AUS, FRA, GRE, ITA, SRB, TUR, USA). The record champion is still the USA with ten wins, however the last win is now 20 years away. At the AST 2014, the USA was close again making it to the final. With Egypt there is only one team that has never been to the AST, all other teams have been there quite often. The German Team had their best outcome in 2010 reaching the second place. Last time, Germany ended up in the 7th place with former Head Coach Alan Ibrahimagic.

With the ‘new’ Head Coach Harald Stein, Germany looks forward to the competition: “The Albert Schweitzer Tournament is a huge highlight for both our players and our staff. It is very special to us that we can compete with the best teams of the world in front of our home crowd. Of course the audience can look forward to a highly motivated German team that is making the first steps towards the European Championship in the summer. We have a lot of talent within the team and it is our goal to set a milestone towards the European Championship 2016. We wanted to compete with the best teams in the preliminary round already. We will play with players that have already shown that they are able to play on the high international level. Now we are working on the special glue for a successful team so that the talent may continue to grow within.”

It is thus all set for another highlight AST. Additional information on the tournament may be found on the website of the German Basketball Federation www.basketball-bund.de/ast.
