Basketball-Supercup to be played in Bamberg
Croatia, Poland, and Macedonia participate at the 21st German Supercup
The German Basketball Federation announced that the annual Supercup is hosted in the JAKO Arena in Bamberg. For the 21st repetition of the four-team-tournament, two Olympic participants will appear to get ready for the European Championship (September 2009 in Poland) where all four teams will perform. German Basketball Fans can already purchase the tickets for the two tournament days (August 21st and 22nd, 2009).
Next to the German National Team (picture left: Tim Ohlbrecht and Konrad Wysocki at the 2008 Supercup in the Puerto Rico game), the host of the European Championship Poland, the Olympic Team of Croatia, and Macedonia will compete to follow Greece, the Supercup Champion of 2008 (93:86 win in the final against Puerto Rico). Germany is scheduled to play Macedonia on the first tournament day while Croatia performs against Poland.
Bamberg is hosting the Supercup for the fourth time after 2004, 2007, and 2008. The German National Team won the tournament once, 2004 in Bamberg.
Germany has already met their Supercup opponents for official National Team games. There have been two games against the National Team of Macedonia (both in the Qualification Round for the European Championship 2003). In their last meeting, Germany hold Macedonia off 86:78 in Koblenz on January 22nd, 2003.
Poland visited Germany for two scrimmages last year for the preparations of the Olympic summer. Led by Dirk Nowitzki and Steffen Hamann (picture right, in the match-up with Slovenia's Jaka Lakovic at the Supercup 2008) Germany won the two games in Halle/Westfalen and Berlin. In total, Germany and Poland met 31 times for official National Team games (18 wins and 13 losses for Germany).
Croatia was one of three teams that qualified for the Olympic Games at the Additional Qualification Tournament in Athens. In the Half Finals of the tournament in Greece, Croatia shocked Germany with a 76:70 win. Due to that loss, the German Team had to play in the game for the last ticket to Beijing against Puerto Rico. In 14 meetings, Germany won eight matches.
"We are very excited to play the Supercup in Bamberg! The venue offers perfect conditions and guarantees great fan support. And of course it is also special for me personally to return to Bamberg", German Head Coach (and former Bamberg club Coach) Dirk Bauermann said.
